The goal of this project is to restore a degraded and denuded section of the West Bay Woods and to create a connection between the Westside Store of the Olympia Food Co-Op, the West Bay Woods and West Bay Park. Once the City completes the next phase of West Bay Park, the woods will also connect to Heritage Park, Tumwater Park, Tumwater Falls and the State of Washington Capitol Campus.
This site has been transformed over the past three years from a blackberry- and ivy-infested hillside to a diverse young native forest with a small creek, a rain garden and a trailhead to a Mt. Rainier viewpoint. The site includes a rain garden, a stormwater swale, and a graveled foot path up to a stone council with a beautiful view of Budd Inlet.
Future work at this site includes further restoration of the forested interior, including the permanent West Bay Creek, and constructing a trail connection to the Olympia Food Co-Op on Rogers Street.
